Variation 1: Yoni mudra is one of the most popular yoga mudras that is meant for quieting the mind and promoting inner peace. The meaning of the word yoni in Sanskrit means “womb” or “source.” Mudra means “gesture” or “seal” and is typically used during meditation for healing energy. Variation 2: Sarva Yoni mudra The Yoni mudra can be described as a gesture that allows a person to get detached from the chaos of the outer existing world. Yoni means uterus or womb and this gesture is named the Yoni Mudra, because the person who practices it regularly has no external contact with the world, pretty much like a baby in the uterus.The yogis who practice this mudra visualize all their chakras. They also are in sync with their inner sounds. Close your eyes and take a few long deep inhalations and exhalations to relax. Sarva-anandamaya (filled with all Bliss) enclosure of Sri Cakra is the abode of this mudra-sakti. This is also known by the name kama kala. Kama suggests the proactive Brahman principle (sabala brahma) which is as slender as the (iksana) with a resolve to expand; kala implies the infinite empirical universe unfolded from kameswara. Prakasa-vimarsa aspects of siva-sakti fill this enclosure. Aim is the bija mantra of this mudra sakti that is saving the seeker from the consequential deficiencies arising out of the errors of omission and commission in his approach for self-realization. This mudra is presented by joining and holding folding both the little fingers (kanishtika) upwards, holding the ring finger of the right hand on that of the left hand and hold them with the pointing fingers(tarjani), joining the middle fingers (madhyama) and joining the thumbs (angusta) and little fingers (kanishtika) pointing downwards as shown in the above photographs.
Once you are comfortable with this pattern of breathing and are able to perform it without thinking about it, draw your minds focus to your inner body’s workings and sounds. If your mind starts to wander away from the focus on the body, acknowledge the thought and gently return to focusing on the sounds of the body. Variation 3: Shanmukhi Mudra How to Do Yonimudra Step by Step and Benefits of Yoni Mudra This is a technique which is meant to facilitate training in the practice of Pratyahara or abstraction, with the aim of withholding the conscious mind from soliciting sensory perceptions. The word Yoni signifies the Ultimate Brahman of Brahmayoni. This unique psycho-physical technique of The Yoga Institute draws inspiration from a tortoise, which withdraws its limbs inside its shell the moment it perceives a danger, in order to conserve energy. Same is with our senses; it goes on receiving unnecessary and uncontrolled impulses, dissipating mental energy. Starting position: Sit in Padmasana or any other meditative posture. If not possible to sit on the floor, sit on a firm chair with an erect backrest. Keep the body above the waist straight and the spine erect. Eyes closed.
The sequence of steps for Yoni Mudra: Place your thumbs on the ears and the index fingers resting gently on the eyelashes. Place the middle fingers on the respective nostrils. The ring fingers are placed above the lips and the little fingers below them. Ensure that your elbows are at shoulder level, parallel to the ground. Passively observe the breath. The mind may wander to other thoughts but gently bring it back to the breathe. Recommended practice: Practice daily in the morning / during the day, as required. Maintain the mental state for as long as possible. Limitations / Contraindications: Psychological disorder – depression.
