they can't take another dreary one

by Mere Harrach

I was feeling so lonely until I finally heard

the conversation between our footsteps

returning up the stairs

the train whistles intruding

and the leaves bobbing around in a big celebration

god I hope they hang on and don't fall soon

make a list of certainties

to feel the ground come back up to your feet

you are breathing,

you have pupils

you have warm arms and hands I want to hold

the night is just the wide and long shadows and the sun always shrinks them up again

two years ago you over

heard me singing and

for hours I was embarrassed I hid in bed until you graced over to me

outside my blanket shield and serenaded me like passionate cicadas to lawn mowers

and now I plant songs on you like kisses

you make me wanna sing to the world
